Posting a finishing time of 14m28s, Morpeth's Carl Avery made a last-gasp effort for victory in the Run Through Quayside 5k on Wednesday 22 April, to also take the NECAA 5k Road Championship title.
In doing so, he won by two seconds over visiting athlete Joe Firth of Leeds City, with recent NECAA 10k Champion Alex Brown in third place, a further six seconds adrift.
Brown, formerly with Morpeth, is now back running in the colours of Houghton Harriers.
The Women’s race was won by new Durham City acquisition Megan Stenhouse, who finished in 77th place overall in 16m49s.
Second place in the Women’s race went to Tyne Bridge Harrier Jessica Eaton, who finished 115th in 17m33s, and Morpeth’s Holly Lawrence finished third in 134th place overall, to take a NECAA Bronze Medal, in 17m46s.
